Antigua and Barbuda Removed from Zika Advisories

ST. JOHN’S, ANTIGUA (October 22, 2018) – The Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority and the Antigua and Barbuda Ministry of Tourism are committed to the safety and health of visitors to Antigua and Barbuda.

We are pleased to announce that the World Health Organization (WHO) has removed its Zika virus country classification scheme, which categorized Antigua and Barbuda along with most of the Caribbean territories as having active Zika virus transmission.

This removal by the WHO comes on the heels of data released by Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA), giving evidence that the Zika virus transmission in the Caribbean had been interrupted for over 12 months, or was at undetectable levels, thereby posing very little risk to residents and visitors to the Region.  This was matched by data shared with CARPHA by Canada, the United Kingdom, Europe and the United States of America, which showed that no Zika had been detected for over 12 months in travellers returning from the Caribbean to their countries.

Antigua and Barbuda had its last confirmed case of the Zika virus in November 2016.  There have been no cases detected since. Active surveillance and vigorous vector control have contributed to the Antigua and Barbuda Ministry of Health Wellness and the Environment’s success in combating the Zika virus disease.

Antigua and Barbuda Minister of Tourism, The Honourable Charles Fernandez said: “We are committed to protecting the health and safety of visitors to our shores, and we look forward to welcoming all our visitors inclusive of honeymooners, and families as they can now travel with peace of mind to Antigua and Barbuda.”

Voted the Caribbean’s Most Romantic Destination by the World Travel Awards in 2015, 2016, 2017 and again in 2018, Antigua and Barbuda has gained a reputation as a leader in the wedding and honeymoon market.

Antigua and Barbuda’s no residency requirements makes it perfectly suited for the ultimate romantic wedding or honeymoon getaway.  The destination boasts award-winning properties, romance-inducing landscapes, exciting excursions and a luxurious beach for every day of the year.

Carib World Travel (CWT) representatives returned on Sunday 23 September from attending the Caribbean Meeting and Incentive Travel Exchange (CMITE) in Montego Bay, Jamaica, held 20 – 23 September.

CMITE was unique in that it brought together buyers and suppliers servicing the Caribbean meeting and incentive travel market and was an invitation-only appointment based event. Carib World Travel was the only company (supplier) invited to attend from Antigua & Barbuda and they sought to promote the country as an attractive and desirable destination as well as the company’s destination management services.

Meetings and Incentive Travel are an important sector of the tourism industry and based around group travel and buyers from the corporate sector. Incentive Travel is usually provided to employees, dealers or distributors as a reward or motivational tool and tends to be leisure based. It is a billion dollar global industry and Carib World Travel through its efforts at CMITE expects to have attracted business to Antigua & Barbuda thereby positively impacting the economy.

The event was attended by sixty buyer organisations from USA and Canada and a similar number of suppliers representing destination management companies, resorts, Tourism Authorities and specialist organisations operating in the region.

In meetings with buyers Carib World Travel highlighted what Antigua & Barbuda had to offer in the way of resorts, culture, activities, tours, facilities, and attractions along with levels of service, air access and experiences available. The company’s strength in creating and delivering professional and successful programs based on the needs of the client were also highlighted to include a number of activities and themed events unique to the company.

The Antigua & Barbuda Tourism Authority supported the efforts of Carib World Travel and follow up meetings will be held to chart further initiatives designed to attract Meeting and Incentive travel to the country.

The Global Meetings and Events Exhibition (EIBTM) is described as a five star opportunity for the global meeting and events industry. Carib World Travel (CWT) was the lone OECS exhibitor at this dynamic three day business focused exhibition which was enhanced by thought provoking professional education programme and networking events.

Over 15,219 meeting industry professional from across the globe including 9,330 meeting and event planners and buyers were present. It afforded Carib World Travel the opportunity to carry out business face-to-face with approximately fifty buyers and professionals from the international meetings, events and business travel industry.

It presented CWT and the Antigua & Barbuda Tourism Authority (ABTA) with a perfect business forum to present its products and services as well as the Antigua and Barbuda brand to senior decision makers, buyers and influencers.
Keen interest was shown by the Russian, Italian, United Kingdom, Spanish, Brazilian and German markets. The company is positive about the return on investment from this event which would benefit not only the company but the whole economy of Antigua and Barbuda.

The team at the event comprised Pamela Arthurton and Dorothy Gittens of Carib World Travel and Cherrie Osborne of the Antigua & Barbuda Tourism Authority based in the UK.

Participation at EIBTM2012 by Carib World Travel was made possible with financial assistance from the European Union facilitated through Caribbean Export Development Agency.
